Developing the Gamealogical Insititute – a behind-the-scenes Journal

Public goal setting

whew! what a week.

I was reading a BGG thread last week someone started about finding good solo play dice games. He was intrigued, as was I, by a game we had both played in the History Channel website for their Expedition Africa show that was recently broadcast. Well, after reading through the thread, I got a wild hair and posted that I would in one week, design, develop and publish a solo print and play (PnP) game.

It was due at 13:00 CDT today – and I made it! Well, it was actually 13:14 when it got on, but after a week 14 minutes isn’t too bad. Plus I had to wait for my lunch break to wrap it up.

The timing was pretty good, since having watched the Expedition show and then having read about some of Stanley’s exploits I was already thinking about game making possibilities. Also, knowing that there is a pretty big an interested audience about all things gaming on the BoardGameGeek website, I knew that promising and NOT delivering would have been bad mojo in that gaming circle.

Well. the game is called “Challenge of the Lukuga River” (which Stanley and others actually did have to explore and navigate) and can currently be gotten to from a link on the Gamealogical Institute home page. I’ll have to work on some “Dodger” and Institute background story for this one – I think it will make a really nice Solo game to sell if I can put together an attractive set of components.

It was a challenge, but a lot of fun. Of course meeting goals is always rewarding.
